Indirect Tax Senior Manager

This position is based in Montreal for one of our clients, a recognized leader in accounting and consulting services in Canada. Their team of more than 250 professionals is spread across their offices in Montreal and Ottawa.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and review indirect tax engagements (advisory and compliance) across GST/HST, QST, PST, Sales and Use tax, and Excise tax ; set scope, timelines, and budgets to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Oversee compliance execution: review returns and data quality, coordinate in/outsourcing or co-sourcing workflows, and perform technical reviews before filings.
  • Research complex issues and craft written advice: prepare technical positions, memos, and client communications that translate rules into practical guidance.
  • Advise on registrations/de-registrations and transaction structuring, including invoicing requirements and the indirect tax impact of special/atypical transactions.
  • Lead audit defense and controversy matters : manage audits/appeals, voluntary disclosures, interpretation requests, and draft notices of objection; liaise with tax authorities.
  • Execute due diligence and post-merger integration support for M&A, identifying risks, recovery/refund opportunities, and integration tasks for tax processes.
  • Drive process improvement and controls, using data/automation where appropriate to strengthen compliance, dashboards, and cash-flow outcomes; stay ahead of legislative and policy changes.
  • Coach, review, and grow the team; build client relationships and support business development through proposals and thought leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of the In-depth GST Course or Master of Taxation (MTax) program
  • Extensive experience in Canadian indirect taxes, including GST, HST, QST, and PST, with a proven track record of managing engagements from start to finish.
  • Deep technical knowledge of GST HST QST PST place of supply rules and input tax credits and the ability to apply them to real transactions
  • Strong communication in English and French with the ability to draft clear memos submissions and client advice in both languages
  • Leadership in reviewing work coaching staff and running projects with timelines budgets and quality standards
  • Experience handling audits appeals and voluntary disclosures and comfortable liaising with tax authorities
  • Knowledge of and interest in sales tax compliance for financial institutions and companies operating in the cryptoasset sector would be an asset.
